Herzlich willkommen

Ich verwende also Google Translate.

Hi Thom,

Welcome to the forum and congrats to your nice frog.
They are even rare in Germany nowadays.

You will find all kinds of specialists, freaks, Gyro Gearloose's, engineers, mechanics and even Unimog developers here.
So your search for the most competent Unimog knowledge base on the Internet was successful.
Especially on the old types like your Frog this is the place to be.

To start with the literature you already dug out is what everybody would have recommended first thing.
Secondly the google translator is doing a good job and besides the inevitable hickups everybody gets your points.
Anyway as a lot of people are capable of English it proved to be a good thing leaving the original text in parallel. If google translator mixes sth up people will be able to correct.
Best translator on single phrases/words and technical terms ENG-GER here from my PoV.
If you need more dealers on parts or services in addition to the ones you already identified (well done BTW) the forum has a special database to be found here.

Besides your already good start by introducing yourself and your Mog people are saluting their posts with their real (first) name.
No joke and IMHO along with the top notch admins best way to avoid bullshitting and insulting.

Welcome again, schöne Grüße aus Bayern and enjoy,
Henning

I changed the engine oil - it was ridiculously low; I'll change it again within a short period of time.

Here's a couple of videos of it idling:

Next up was the steering: there is a ton of free play in the steering wheel, and once you move past the free play, it binds. My assumption is that someone tightened up the adjustment hoping to eliminate the play

I eliminated about 60% of the free play by replacing the washers on the pitman arm with the correct size. It still binds, though.

Sadly, a lot of old German cars fall victim to American shade-tree mechanics.

I've got her up in the air ready to finish the deferred maintenance once the rain lets up. Next will be to replace the transmission, differential and portal box oils. Hopefully the brake bleeder screws are not frozen, and I flush the brake fluid, too. The steering gearbox seemed like it was empty, too - I added what seemed like .5 liters of heavy gear oil to it.
