"And the automatic oil refilling" This is not correct. This is a breathing for the axle and wheel gear. I have closed the original breating pipes in the wheel gear. Now the breathing is throug the rubber tubes.
I use NMT and GSM in my fishing trips but that is not 100%. Some Icelanders use VHF or SSB. I think you will be 100% with your IRIDIUM satellite telefon.

My gsm is +849 3640 and the NMT is +855 0799

Jonas, hvernig hefurdu thad?

I just discovered this thread about Mogs and Iceland. In my opinion those two words form a perfect combination.

When visiting Iceland in 2004 I saw two things. One, the beautiful scenery of the island (ever changing, brutal, magnificent), and two, a couple of Unimogs better equipped for the environment then our Toyota Rav4 rental.

Then on our way to Þórsmörk, the two connected.

About halfway through our journey, and in sheer optimism, we planned to go to Þórsmörk, but the weather was appalling that september (2004). The streams were deeper and wider then normal so at the first major crossing we decided to turn back to Vik. At that moment it was a dud, but later we found out that a lot of people were stranded at Þórsmörk because of the weather, so we felt lucky.

Turning the car I decided to 'someday' return to Iceland with a proper 4x4, my own Unimog. About a year later I bought my 404s and now I'm in the process of converting it to a campervan, Iceland style.

I'm in no hurry, so don't expect me to return this year, but I guess in about five years time I feel the itch to cross some streams in my Unimog. Unitll then I will read the experiences of others on this forum.

Keep on Mogging,

kind regards,
Johan from the Netherlands

Hi Jonas,
yes, I have tons of questions. I'm planning a trip to iceland in June of this year together with a friend. We'll be starting the trip in northern Germany and are planning to take the ferry from Denmark. We've been working on a 404s over the last two years and want to take it out on a ride. It's got a 3-litre-diesel-engine now.
I was told, that Iceland has been pushing some environmental issues. Is it possible to leave the road once in a while and do some serious off-roading?
What else is to know? Have you been there more than once?

Hi Goof,
Were you ever on Iceland?
Because the whole island is off road
Ok, there are streets but they are not comparable to our german ones.
I was only traveling with my GOLF2, and that hurts  Thats why we were spending lot of time and money in our 4x4 which is avaiting the island...
And if you will have a real off road feeling, you can try the grey-dash- marked roads, they are horrible. ( they are marked on the signs all over iceland) I also take the roads in the western Island, and they were horrible too, but they were just in preparing...
If you will find a suitable environment, you can´t path through it...

Where are you located? We´re coming from Hamburg, if you need some information in german - or maps - I´m willing to help...
BTW: we´re also planning to come this year, but I still don´t know when. My holiday seems to be in Sept.
Did you check out Jonas webside? Any other question is unnecessary...

kind regards, KOLJA

Hi Kolja, I have not found the GPS position. I found this link: http://www.reykjahlid.is/html/lofthellir.html
They say Lofthellir is near Mt. Hvannfell 30 min. walk from the road
(I think between Hvannfell and Búrfell)
If I find the GPS position I will send a mail to you.
GPS position for Hvannfell is 65 33 242N / 16 45 177W
