Hello community,
we arrived yesterday evening at home in germany.
Iceland was so fantastic - we earned so many facts, I will start to tell:
First we wanted to visit the ASKJA, so we drove the following streets:
No. 93 to Egilstadir, No.1 to No. 901, then the No. 907 followed by the F910 direct to the F88 and ASKJA. It was realy nice there.
We wanted to take the track to the north, but this was not recommended from the wardens there, so we take the F88 back directly to the No.1
Then to Myvatn, searching the cave LOFTHELLIR - there was a trip bookable for 7700ISK /person to take a guided trip into it. That was too much for us. So we tried to search it - without entering it - but we didn´t find it.
Our plan was to take the SPRENGISANDUR to the south, but unfortunately our motor got several false ignitions - downhill there were a lot of pamm padrammpammpammm. So we drove to AKUREYRI.
The Mercedes Benz Service was routing us to a truck service.
They worked 4 hours ( 35.000 ISK !!!) to adjust again the ignition.
(We did that before our trip to ICELAND at Mercedes for 110Euro - SHITT)
The problem was a defective ignition contact for the coil ( this was brand new ! )
We installed the contactless ignition from Westfield 4x4. In the describtion there are talking about a capacitor which we have to demount - so I called Ulli - later on, we found that capacitor directly in the cap. I´m still not knowing if we installed the contactless ignition correctly, because the describtion is not telling exactly were the red wire have to install. We placed it now directly in front of the rististor.
Ok, 35000ISK a lot of money later, we drove back to SPRENGISANDUR.
We drove the No. 842 to the SPRENGISANDUR F26.
The track was good, very calm and not spectaculous. So the F26 is not my faforite track. It was nice to drive in the near ( 15km ) the glaciers ( Vatna + Hofsjökull) and that all the time in black sand. We take the F887 to Laugafell, this was a little bit nicer.
Then we drove to Landmannalaugar - again fantastic! staied there for two days, one day Anna hiked a lot and I fixed our horn which was broken down. The metall strip broke off, the cables broke off, so no horn was useable.
Then we drove south with the clock to Thorsmörk. ALso very fantastic !
Up to now we were very happy with our holiday, that changed suddenly!!!
We crossed a lot of rivers, bad ones, good ones, but then we tried to cross the KROSSA. This time the approximately 500 m wide river bed had 6 or 7 rivers. Two of them had a bad stream. We took the first small two rivers with the UNIMOG, I tried to cross that first bad river by foot, that was not the best idea! The stream was so hard, that I coulnt cross it dry...
SO I was wet, it was super cold and I was afraid.
Then we checked the best way, saw some tiretracks and wanted to take that track. This tiretracks looked very nice, but when I drove into that river, the UNIMOG tilted so much, that I use the break - again a bad idea. Stopping uin a river is dangerous. The sand under the tire will wash out, like if you stay at the beack in the waves, the foots will sink again and again... This happend to us, so the UNIMOG tilted again to the left side.
I decided to take the first gear and take the trip reverse. Luckily that was working, the Unimog drove slowly back to our starting point.
This is not the way to cross a river !
We staied than in BASAR, a campside on the other side of Thorsmörk. sleeped there, Hiking on top of a nice hill VALAHNUKUR and saw two big trucks crossing the KROSSA without any problems. The first one was definetly a white UNIMOG, the second I thought was a russian military vihicle. On the next day, Anna was hiking 26km to Skogar, too much for me
And when I was catching her on the other side at the Skogarfoss, we planned to take the track near the VATNAJÖKULL ( F910) to Askja.
BUT: Then I saw the strange "russian truck" with several UNIMOG again... And followed them, hoping they stay at the Seljalandfoss. And they were there...
I used my horn to a warm welcome, because there were 4 UNIMOG with that strange "russian vehicle". I parked behing that "russian vehicle" and asked the guys were they are comming from...
And now the SURPRISE: All of them were the TOP Managers of Mercedes Benz TRUCK Germany !
I asked which strange vehicle that is, some people told me only this is a prototype, and I´m not allowed to take a picture...
But then on guy told me no, he was on the IAA, so you can take a picture, his name is S2000 (prototype name) and this will be the new MERCEDES TRUCK for military ambience. AND I took pictures...
They told me that this is a test drive combined with a TEAM BUILDING trip, and that they want to test the UNIMOGs and the S2000 in Iceland and that they want to cross the KROSSA...
I was kidding, if they had a service guy with them, to fix our Unimog ( AGAIN IGNITION problems) and one of the guys told me he will be here in 10min - he took a phone call, and after 5 min the UNIMOG Service training superviser was IN defitetly IN our MOTOR. 2 min later he knows the problem, fixed it and we spoke a lot about 404, and the other Unimog.
He told us that we must be very luky to meet the <HIGHEST TOP 10 MANAGERS> of Mercedes BENZ LKW. He got a test drive with our UNIMOG, and it was better than ever again!
He told me that they were triing to take the KROSSA next morning...
I got nervous...
We changed our plan, and followed the UNIMOG´s back to THORSMÖRK.
When we arrived at the River KROSSA, all other UNIMOGS were on the other side...
We were standing 500m away from them, knowing that we can´t cross the KROSSA...
Suddenly the car of one Icelandic driver ( you can see it at the picture above with the man on the right)( he carried the Service instructor and the driver of the boss) used the light horn several times, he starts his engine and crossed the river to come over to us...
I got nervous again...
Then he was on our side... ( video existing)
I talked to the icelandic driver how to cross that bad river, he told me no problem, told me how to cross rivers exactly, and invited us to come over in his car. With him there was a friendly Mercedes MAnager, telling us that this is not the biggest problem to cross that river...
So the icelandic driver took us over and do it again and again, to show us how to cross rivers... Than it was our turn. We started our engine and followed the icelandic driver over the bad bad KROSSA...
It worked !!! It realy worked !!! Knowing from him how to do crossing a river it was very easy to cross the Krossa.
On the other side - so in Thorsmörk,
I had the longest luckiest smile in my life, all Mercedes guys were happy with us, that we came over... The boss of Mercedes Benz LKW invited us to a great meal ( grilled steak, Shrimps, Fish salat and so on ) and we spoke together about the S2000, the other UNIMOG, and the icelandic driver...
It was amazing to hear, that the icelandic driver was a famous one...
It is known as Rally Palli a winner of the Ralley championchip in Iceland...
So RALLY PALLI showed us how to cross rivers.
AT this point, thanks a lot Rally Palli, the complete Mercedes Benz LKW guys for that event, and specially to the service instructor of Mercedes to fix our UNIMOG !!!
That was not enough...
We heared that they have the same planed trip...
taking the F910 near the VATNAJÖKULL.
But we were slow, so we decided to hurry up at the next day, they wanted to go to Nyidalur and staied there the next night, he had the same plan... But we wanted to take another track because we "used" the Mercedes guys a lot and don´t wanted to follow them all the time, they were not our babysitter...
So we drove our own way, hoping to meet them again...
ANd it was fortunately at that point were we stuck on our track.
We took a track that has no name, it is going from F210 to Landmannalaugar, an unofficial track, there are two, we took the right one... That was the worst track I every saw, drove, feel !!!
The track was rough, very rough. We came to a point were the track was so tilted that we climbed up a hill to take another way, then we were loosing our optimism, the following track was a steep hill, with a enourmous tilting, unusable for us we thought.
( this picture shows the track - for icelandic and professionals no problem, we were very afraid of this tilted track. - The track is comming from the right to the left)
At this moment, 5 Unimog including the S2000 arrived. They took a wrong way, didn´t know were they were, spo we explained were we were and that it is too much for us, and that we take the track back to the beginning, so we wanted to stop.
They looked at that hill and tought wow, enormous steep, a little bit tilting, no one else could drive that way then the UNIMOG !
So they took that track, and waited until we changed our plan again, to drive that steep hill in first gear, with highest gas up on the top. We drove 1,8km/h, I think we lost there 30l fuel at that 100 m high hill...
Again very lucky we followed the UNIMOG´s +S2000 to Landmannalaugar, but then we decided it is enough for us.
It was so hard to drive this track for me, I think I lost 5years of my life, and 10kg

So the F910 will be reached at the next time ICELAND ! For sure ! But then with some other 404 driver, which can help in an emergency !!! ( and they have to be as slow as we are driving all the hills )
That was my little report ( in english) Now I try to place in pictures...
All the best drivers, be carefull on Iceland roads, and specially in rivers.
I understand now the limit ! The limit is not done by my UNIMOG, it is my limit which was reached !
So far, remember don´t break!!!
KOLJA and Anna
